Here is the very first page of the literary magazine. Note that the inside cover - the page on the left - MUST be blank. They cannot print on the inside cover. Also note that when you create your margins for your pages you have to have EXTRA margin for the paper that goes into the binding area. That paper is being used to "hold the booklet together". So if you had 1/2 inch on the top, right and bottom of that page you see on the right, you probably want 1" on the left since 1/2" of that is going to be stuck down in the binding area. Look at any book you own to see how this works.

Another thing to know is that Lulu does NOT print on 8.5" x 11" pieces of paper! They print on larger pieces of paper and cut it down. Why is this? When a printer works on a piece of paper, it normally cannot print to the very edges of all sides. There is a printer margin within the printer's capabilities itself, where the printer cannot get ink onto the very edges. Since you might want your literary magazine to have color all the way to the edge of the paper, what they do is have you lay out on a larger size of paper. They print on a larger size. That way when they cut it down to 8.5" x 11" in size the ink can actually be at the very edges of the final printed copy.

Lulu's instructions tell you all of these margin instructions. When you submit the "insides" of your literary magazine you start with the first "inner" page and go to the last "inner" page. The cover is NOT included in this PDF you submit.

Technical notes: There is a tiny white margin on the right, a 2cm margin on the top, and none on the bottom. The spacing from the binding looks perfect to me, it might be hard to tell in this photo because of the angle but there's a good amount of space between the binding and the left edge of the text. I love how the grey graphic goes "into" the binding but the text itself has a margin to help it stay readable.
