Meet My Parents

On New Year's Day
I long to meet my parents
as they were before my birth.
-- Natsume Soseki

Natsume Soseki lived from 1867 to 1916 and was praised for his novels and haiku. This poem is especially poignant for him. His mom was 40, his dad 53 when he was born - he was an "accident" child as they already had five kids and didn't want any more. He was given away to another couple when he was one, then went home when he was nine as that couple divorced. His birth mother died when he was 14. So his childhood was far from ideal. It's no wonder he pondered just what his parents were like before that all began.

Here is a bookmark I made of this haiku. These are my own parents, taken right at my birth.
