Determinism is a philosophy that says each action is part of a long chain of actions, sort of like a series of dominos tumbling down against each other.
Famous philosphers in the realm of determinism are Immanual Kant, Thomas Hobbes and David Hume. These philosophers felt that free will was an illusion. Everything we choose to do in our life is on the basis of our past history and experiences.
Some have even gone so far as to say that criminals should not be punished for their deeds - because what they did was really a result of their childhood, upbringing, and forces around them.
