Hair Basic FAQ

Hair is dead protein, growing from a hair follicle. There is not much you can "do" to hair to help it live better, because it is dead. The best you can do is use conditioners to help the hair cells lie flat and smooth, vs being bumpy and stiff. The hair is the 'end result' of your diet and condition, and as it is extruded from your follicle, it does not change after that. So if you want a lush, full head of hair, it is important that you eat healthy foods including a LOT of protein, plus other vitamins and drink a lot of water. The more healthy your follicle is each day as it makes its new amount of hair, the better your hair will look.

Hair doesn't last forever. It pushes out for a few years, then rests, then falls out. Then a new hair begins. Your hair is constantly in a state of renewal.

The number of hair follicles you have on your body is set by genetics. So you will always have that number of 'hair growth spots'. Each given hair follicle can make heavier or lighter hair depending on the hormones in your system, the amount of stress you're under. Your follicles can even clog shut if you don't take good care of your skin. It is critical that you eat healthily, drink a lot of water, and for your head, brush regularly but gently. Brushing helps to stimulate the blood flow in your skin, and keep those hair follicles working smoothly.

Different people often have different coarsenesses of hair even with the same number of physical follicles. Sometimes it is because the people in question have different levels of hormones in their system, which cause the hair to become thicker or thinner. However, in other cases it is that the follicles themselves are more or less sensitive to the hormones. So you could have two people with the exact same level of hormones - but one has thicker hair because her follicles are more sensitive to those hormones.
