How Hair Grows Back
There are all sorts of myths about how hair works, what causes hair to grow, what causes hair to stop growing. It is amazing how humans are really interested in hair growing in some places - say the top of your head - but absolutely hate it when hair grows in another place - say on a teenage girl's legs. We spend a lot of effort and money in promoting hair in some places and getting rid of it in other areas.
First, how you remove a hair does in fact affect how it grows back. Think about this logically. Hair is a long strand of protein that comes out of the hair follicle and grows "up", like a tree. If you completely rip out a tree by its roots, the tree might find it hard or impossible to grow again. Some teenage girls wildly rip out eyebrows and other hairs, not realizing they are destroying their natural beauty. If "ripping out" is to be done, it's usually wisest to have a professional waxer do it, so that they do not harm your skin, and so they only rip out hairs that should be gone. Few would argue with waxing out chin hairs, but eyebrows that are over-trimmed can make the face look sickly.
Shaving of course just trims the tops of the hairs, sort of like mowing grass. When you mow grass, the grass plant itself is still healthy and happy - it's just shorter. When you mow your hair, you are merely cutting it down to just below skin level. In fact you are also making the tip of the hair unnaturally sharp, sort of like sharpening a sword. That hair-tip is now quite likely to become an ingrown hair, because the sharp tip can puncture nearby skin and grow sideways insted of growing straight as a normal hair would.
Note there is a myth that I've even seen in "Women's Magazines" that state that shaving makes hair grow back more quickly. Usually this information is provided by a professional waxer :) I have researched this and every study I've found has shown that shaving causes NO difference in hair growth. When you mow grass, the grass grows back more thickly because grass depends on sunlight. Hair doesn't care about sunlight. There is still the same number of hair follicles, making the same number of hairs. They grow at the same rate.
It is very normal for humans to get more hairy as they age. It's part of maturity. Young kids rarely have a lot of body hair - it develops as they hit puberty and grow older. So expect to find more and more hair on your body as the years roll on. You don't really want to be a three year old again, do you? Embracing your body's changes is an important part of growing up. If you are female and really dislike some of the hair, you can resort to the waxing and other techniques mentioned. Also, many women find their female hormone levels fade as they age, and therefore the balance of male-female hormones in their system is altered. This can cause the hair to get darker and thicker. Talk to your doctor about hormone therapy if this becomes a serious issue for you.
