Green Tea Health Benefits

The green tea leaf - the same leaf found in all forms of tea - naturally has polyphenols in it. Polyphenols are a type of antioxidant - the same healthy substance found in red wine. Antioxidants help fight cancer, fight of other illness and keep your blood system healthy. Antioxidants are key in cleaning your system of harmful free radicals.

If you're curious, the name of the antioxidant found in tea is Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). This is a form that is far more potent than Vitamin C or Vitamin E. There's a reason that doctors would tell their patients to drink tea with honey when they were sick!! The tea would provide a potent antioxidant boost - and the local honey would help with any local allergy problems.

The reason that people feel green tea is better than black tea or oolong tea for health reasons is that green tea is the most "pure" form of tea. With black tea or oolong tea, the tea has been oxidized. That is why the tea changed from green to black. The oxidizing process is thought to reduce the antioxidant load of the resulting leaf.
