When you play a hole in golf, there is a set score, or par, that you are expected to make. If you get the ball in the hole with one hit less than that score, you have hit birdie.
So, for example, if the first hole in a course is par 4, they expect you to hit the ball 4 times to get it in the hole. If you get it in the hole with 3 hits, you have sunk a birdie.
