Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome

Are you a night owl? Do you like to stay up late and sleep late? This is very common for teenagers and young adults - and is called Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome.

Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome seems to be genetic - if you are a night owl, it is very likely that at least a few of your grandparents and parents also were this way. While the normal body cycle causes you to sleep at night and wake during daylight hours, people with Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome simply cannot fall asleep when the sun goes down. They stay active and awake until 2 or 3 in the morning.

Also, while most people are triggered to wake up when the sun is shining, those with Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome can easily sleep even with the morning sun streaming on their faces.

Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome is not something you can "fix". It is part of your body's cycle. If you try to force your body to sleep earlier than it is ready to, chances are you will simply lie awake in bed. If you try to wake up earlier than your body wants to, you will show symptoms of "sleep drunkenness" - inability to think clearly or process information.

While Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome often becomes less severe when people age, many people with Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome simply take on jobs that allow them to get into work at later hours - perhaps work 2nd or 3rd shift, work find a job that lets them work from home. That way they are just as productive as other workers - but do their work at later hours.
