The Witch of Elsdon
BBC Series Robin Hood
In this "second episode" (i.e. the one after the two-parter first episode) you get Jennet of Elsdon as the pretty blond woman who is accused by Sir Guy of witchcraft. It's very clearly indicated that she is NOT a witch - she's just a healer - but that she is being persecuted for not sleeping with Guy. The Sheriff doesn't care, but he wants some poison to take out Robin Hood with.
There are interesting undertones in this episode. Marion is sick of being treated like a puppy dog that waits at home while everybody else does the work. Scarlett is pretty much seduced by Jennet, who fakes joining the group in order to poison them. He is then furious at the deception, since Jennet almost succeeds. However, Marion jumps in saying in essence "Oh forgive her, she was only going to slay us all to save her husband." What?!??! If a GUY went around killing an entire group of people to save his wife, I doubt they would be as understanding. What if she actually told them the problem and got help? Or worked to save her husband? Her only choice was to poison a bunch of people and then trust the Sheriff to release them? That really bugs me a lot. I agree completely with Scarlett for being upset.
Robin himself comes off as quite a jerk in this series, with his brush-offs of Marion and her wanting to be a mature adult. One of the best lines in this episode comes from the Sheriff, who comments that a bunch of men living in the woods with just one female is ripe for disaster. Well said!
