The Swords of Wayland
BBC Series Robin Hood
I've always loved this pair of episodes. The visuals of the flowing red cloaks, the idea of gathering sacred swords, always struck a chord with me. I love how the tame nuns are really wild women underneath
A friend of Marian's shows up, five days away, and the group is unsure about venturing so far to help this village out. They decide to help. In the meantime, the witch-nuns have six out of the seven swords they need. We have the classic "the villagers all hide" scene that's been done in many movies. It's a little odd that Robin - who has encountered magic - laughs at demons being able to exist. Also oddly, Marian gives a speech about "if only my father had met these guys" - when he had only a few episodes previously.
There's a battle and they kill a few of the enemy's group. They all wear little pacts around their necks. A great line from Tuck - "Pacts with the devil are not legally binding!" :)
Soon one of Marian's father's old friends is around. He gets control of Robin, and thinks Marian is silly for standing by him. The abbess gets the sword, and bewitches his friends. Robin and Marian escape, they are captured by their bewitched friends, and a madman helps Robin escape. In classic silliness, Robin plays dead and the rest don't even bother to go check.
Soon the cauldron of Lucifer worshippers is gathering, Robin is coming in to rescue his friends, Lucifer is being summoned. But of course Robin leaps in, gets his sword back, and saves the day.
A good episode set!
