Pre-Spice Mass
When the little makers excrete, and this is mixed with water, a pre-spice mass forms. This mass erupts violently, shooting up in the air and causing the sand above it to fall into the hole.
When the mass, which is now up on top of the sand, dries in the sun, it becomes spice.
