This harsh world is the homeworld for the House Corrino. It is the Imperial Prison Planet. While many believe the fearsome troops employed by the Corrino family - the Sardaukar - are trained from recruits, they are actually drawn from the best warriors that survive the prison system.
It is a legend that the Fremen people were enslaved on Salusa Secundus for many generations before escaping and ending up on Dune.
