Marianne Dashwood - Sense and Sensibility
Marianne Dashwood is the younger sister, full of dreams of poetry and flights of fancy. She thinks dying for love is the ultimate aim for any woman. It's a hard fall for her, to realize love cannot conquer all.1995 Sense and Sensibility
Kate Winslet does a great job here. Her fresh face really reflects innocence and a desire to run free. The piano playing and singing seem natural. I don't like how she thinks she was left only for money and still pines after her lost love, though.
2008 Sense and Sensibility
She really doesn't match Kate here. She is calm and rational, she doesn't have the same fire of Kate. Her "but Edward has little passion" speech is itself very mild. She likes Brandon, plays piano for him, talks with him - but is really surprised when she realizes people think they are a couple, since he's 35 and she's only 16. It never occurred to her that he was being romantic. I do like that she realizes Willoughby was a slimeball and isn't pining after him later on.

1981 Sense and Sensibility
This is the most feeble out of the Mariannes. She isn't romantic or full of teen angst at all here. She is meek and mousy and barely seems to know anything about poetry. If anything her only emotion is petulance at time over Elinor not talking to her. Her greatest draw to Willoughby is that he's actually willing to talk with her.

In this version when Marianne is rescued, rather than being excited, she is shy and nervous about breaking the rules. That's not much like Marianne at all!
