Lucy Steele - Sense and Sensibility

Lucy Steele snagged Edward Ferrars when they were quite young, and plans on marrying him. She realizes Elinor is sort of a threat and then torments her for months by telling her all about her great plans for marriage with Edward. Then when Edward is disowned (for the engagement) she promptly jumps ship to brother Robert.

1995 Sense and Sensibility
Imogen Stubbs is great here. She strikes the perfect balance of pretty and smart - you can see why Edward was taken with her - and also sly and manipulative. Not overtly so - just very subtly. I love the balance of her character.

2008 Sense and Sensibility
Lucy has a sister Anne who is very talkative, and they go around as a pair. Lucy is the same bright eyed and pressing character as in 1995. A little shyer, more bashful. You don't quite get the sense that she's a money-grubbing mercenary here, you think she might actually have fallen in love and then just gets swept up by things after that. In this version it is the sister who spills the beans on Lucy, not Lucy herself.

1981 Sense and Sensibility
Lucy is almost pitiful in this version. Apparently Edward has been deliberately snubbing her, not returning letters, ignoring her and so on. She hasn't done anything wrong, after all, and she's been loyal to him, so for her to treat her like this is quite questionable.
