John Dashwood - Sense and Sensibility
John Dashwood is the eldest brother in the Dashwood family. His mother died, and his father remarried Mrs. Dashwood. So the three girls are his half sisters. You can understand how they're a bit distant from each other.1995 Sense and Sensibility
John isn't a bad guy. He was going to give his sisters a nice amount of money. He allows himself to be swayed by his enthusiastic wife into giving them nothing at all. So he's very wishy-washy.
2008 Sense and Sensibility
Again, he's walked over by his wife. He tries to at least give them money at the beginning, and later to have them over after the Willoughby situation gets rough. His wife disagrees, and he doesn't fight - but he does throw a party to invite all the Farrars family together. In the photo it's his conniving wife in the background.

1981 Sense and Sensibility
In this one they portray John as being completely obsessed with money. Which doesn't necessarily make sense since he owns a huge estate and has married an incredibly rich woman. Also he's shown as being obsessed with the interests of his mother in law, which also doesn't make sense because if he was so caring about what family members think he'd have taken far better care of his own siblings. He seems driven by plot in this one vs by a real character. I wish they rounded him out better here.
