Cucumber
Growing Information and Photos
I adore cucumbers! They are so tasty! They are technically Cucumis sativus and are related to squash and gourds.
They originally came from India but have been enjoyed all over the world for a long time now. The English had them by the 1300s.
Cucumbers grow fairly easily in New England. The plants have very large leaves which grow in a spread around the base plant, and the cucumber fruit then grow beneath that spread of leaves. A given plant will make several cucumbers.
Technically, since the seeds are inside the cucumber plant, they are a fruit!
We grow cucumbers from seed in Massachusetts, planting in late May, and the first edible fruit are ready in late July.
