Resizing Images for the Web -
Photoshop Free Online Course
Be sure to understand the Concepts of Resolution, Visual Size and File Size before beginning to resize your images, so you end up with the most appropriate images for your website.
Once you decide how big your image is going to be, it's time to actually make it that size. Most digital cameras and scanners create HUGE images that are not only gigantic visually, but are also huge as far as how much disk space they gobble up. Neither is appropriate for the web.
Here are the steps you take to turn your massive, original image into a web-friendly smaller version.
1. Open Photoshop.
2. Use File - Open and browse to find your image.
3. Go into Image - Image Size
4. Choose the width of your image (usually 400 pixels for photos). Leave the Constrain Proportions box so that Photoshop automatically adjusts the height of the image to keep it in proportion.
5. Choose View - Actual to see the image as it would appear on your monitor. Keep in mind that other people with other monitor sizes, and other monitor resolutions, might see this image as being larger or smaller.
6. Choose File - Save for Web
7. I like to use high resolution JPG here. That gives the best quality image to the user, but still squashes the file size down to something reasonable. You can choose medium or low quality if you want, so the image loads a bit more quickly. But remember, you're degrading the quality of your artwork. That's not a choice I personally want to make.
8. Click on OK.
9. Give your new file a filename. Keep it short, meaningful, with NO special symbols or spaces. Remember, this file is going on the web. Many web browsers choke on strange characters or spaces in file names.
10. Upload your image to your web host, and see how it looks!
