Lisa and Bob in San Francisco and Napa Valley:
Friday, October 12th

Our first appointment on Friday was with the Cain Vineyard and Winery, at 10:30am. We left ourselves 2 hours to get there, and headed out around 8:30. The drive up to the bridge over the bay was through suburbs, industrial areas, and rolling brown-scrub hills. The bridge was interesting because in this bay area are stored many old military vessels. They were tied to each other in groups of 5 or 6, just floating in the middle of the bay. Quite an interesting sight!

We then drove through much quieter roads, past a large amusement park, through rolling green hills and pastures. There were few buildings to be seen. The first winery we passed was Hakusan Sake Gardens, just after the turn onto 29/121. Soon we hit the famous Napa Statue!

Cain is at the top of the main Napa drag, so we drove past many famous names on the way north - Chandon, Cakebread, Franciscan, Sutter Home, Beringer, and more. It was amazing to see them one after another - all the names normally sitting side by side on the wine shop shelves. Traffic was very light, and we zipped along northwards.

We hit the small town center before turning left, up into the mountains. Cain isn’t located on the main strip - it’s nestled away in the hills, surrounded by trees and vineyards.

The road was VERY windy, with sharp turns and narrow passages. We passed vineyards nestled into nooks, cattle guards and fences, beautiful vistas of the valley below.

Just after ten we drove into the quiet grounds of Cain, with just a few cars parked besides the classic building. We were there.
