NCL Spirit History
I adore learning more about the ships I am going to ride on. It makes the voyage so much more interesting!The NCL Spirit was originally built in Germany, for Hong Kong trips with the Star line. It was set up with oriental features and mah jongg rooms! Then NCL bought it because their Pride of America was pretty much sunk in dock in 2004. The Spirit is pretty much the "first of its style" and while she has a sister ship - the Virgo - the Virgo is still with the Star line and therefore the Spirit is the only ship of its type in the NCL fleet.
The Spirit is a bit infamous because in 2008 it accidentially rammed a pier in New York City while trying to dock :) This is also the ship that got slammed by a "rogue wave" near Tortola.
The NCL Spirit was completely refurbished in fall 2008 - new carpets, new upholstery, lots of polishing.
