Twitter - Social Networking Websites
Twitter was launched in July 2006 and currently has 1.3 **billion** users. Every single day there are 100 million active Twitter users. That's an enormous volume of people to reach. Along with Facebook and Google+ it's one of the top social networking platforms on the planet.
Here's a quick summary of how the Twitter process works. There are then step-by-step instructions below to help you with each aspect of the process.
You start by going to twitter.com. Set up an account there, using your personal email address. Load up an image of some sort - either your photo or maybe a cute image related to your topic area.
That's it! Now make a little post about what you are doing. Maybe you're reading an interesting book in your topic area. Maybe you've just posted a new article on feeding your parakeet. Maybe you're in your forums! You can have a URL in your Twitter posting, so it's a great way to build traffic to your site.
Once you have your Twitter feed working properly, add a bookmark to your web browser, perhaps in a new folder called "Social Networking". Visit it every day and update it with what you're doing. If you have made a new blog post or other similar content update, be sure to link to that. That way your Twitter followers get alerts when you've added new content.
Let your friends know about your new Twitter feed. Mention it in your newsletter and forum! Yes, not all people will be interested in checking out Twitter - but a lot of people DO use this service. By providing your updates in as many ways as possible, you ensure that as many people know about your information as possibly can. You're covering all the bases. You never know who might enjoy the Twitter feed and use that as their main method of keeping track of you!
You also never know which Twitter fans might be randomly searching the Twitter system, find you, and suddenly learn about your fantastic project. You could get a whole new group of followers who had never heard of you before.
Suggestions for Twitter Posts
Make them lively and fun! Remember, people who see these posts might not know about your site. Make them specific, not vague. Talk about:
Pride and Prejudice is an awesome book to read with your daughter. Here's why! http:// x
or
If you have a dog, these are the five things you MUST check in your dog food ingredient list. http:// x
Try to always have a URL in each post for more information. That way your posts are always useful. Don't make five posts in a row on a topic with each adding one line of the text. Instead make ONE post and link to a page for more information - your forum thread, your article on the topic, etc. Twitter is meant to be providing alerts - not long, drawn out blogs posted one sentence at a time.
Hook Up with Friends
Once your account is made, do a search for friends and family.
Use the "follow" option to follow them. Then ask them to follow you in return, to help promote you.
Most of all, have fun! Twitter is a powerful tool once you get the hang of it.
