A table of players gets together, and one is the "dealer". The dealer shuffles a deck of 52 cards (i.e. a normal deck of cards). In the meantime, the two people to his left put some money into the pot so the game has a pot to begin with. This is "posting the blinds".
Each person on the table gets 2 cards, face down. This is their "hole", also known as the pocket cards. Everyone bets at this point, starting with the third person on the dealer's left. This is the "pre flop". You can raise, check or fold, based on how good you think your two cards are.
When this round is done, the dealer discards the "burn card" on the top of the deck. Then "the flop" are dealt - three cards that are shown face up on the table. These cards are shared by everyone on the table, to make their hands.
Another round of betting goes on, starting with the player on the dealer's left, as players decide if their hand is worth betting on or not. When this round is done, another card is burnt, then a final card is shown face up. Players can now make a traditional 5 card hand based on the 2 cards in their personal deck plus the 4 cards shown on the table. Again, a round of betting happens, starting with the player on the dealer's left.
Now it's showdown time. The player to the LEFT of the last person to call starts to show his cards, and whoever has the best hand wins!
