Elinor Dashwood - Sense and SensibilityElinor Dashwood is pretty much the star of the story. She holds her family together, puts her own desires away while she manages the food stores, the emotional traumas of her various family members.
1995 Sense and Sensibility
Emma Thompson is of course brilliant. They make Elinor older - in her late 20s - which explains her maturity and her spinsterhood a bit more. She has that mixture of calm and sadness, and patience.
The only real downside in this version is that Elinor lacks background. In other versions she has interests. In this one she's just "the mature one" while her siblings have interests.
2008 Sense and Sensibility
It's hard to compete with Emma, but this is a really nicely done Elinor. I love how her walls are covered with her paintings, how Elinor has her own creativity and style. I also like that she escapes to a cave by the ocean to be alone and cry.

1981 Sense and Sensibility
I realize Elinor is supposed to be the staid one, but here she is wooden. She doesn't even seem to be repressing feelings, she just seems not to care at all in many scenes. It's not that she's trying to be the rock, it's that she's detached. I'm just not fond of this portrayal. In some situations she's just plain cold to her sister.
