Mary Bennet
Pride and Prejudice Jane Austen

Poor Mary is one on of the most maligned characters in Pride & Prejudice. She is the "non social" daughter of the bunch, and constantly ridiculed by her other sisters. She loves music and reading, but nobody cares much about her. In most versions of the story she is the only one you figure will end up as an old maid, sad and alone.

Poor Mary is dearly in love with Mr. Collins in both the BBC version and the 2005 version, although this isn't hinted at in the book. It makes sense, though. Someone has to love the poor guy. It's almost a shame that he ends up with Charlotte - who merely tolerates him - rather than Mary, who actually appreciates his way of life.
