Casino Royale
Released 2006

Reviewed and Researched by Lisa Shea

The Casino Royale movie introduces us to a new James Bond - Daniel Craig. Intriguingly, this was the very first "story" about James Bond in the chronology. I.e. it tells the story of how he very first became 007, and how he developed his flippant attitude about relationships.

Interestingly, where most Bonds focus on the beauty of the female body, like the "Venus emerging from the sea" of the very first Bond movie (Dr. No), this one reverses the theme with *James* emerging from the sea, looking quite handsome! The entire beginning of the film is just one long action rush, with some amazing stunts.

In a nod to modern sensibilities, the gambling action of the movie is poker, rather than the old style baccarat of the book.

Wine, Martinis and Cocktails
Bond begins by drinking a large Mount Gay with soda. Mount Gay is a rum from Barbados, so in essence he's having a rum and coke.

Next, James moves on to Champagne. He wants a Bollinger Grand Anee along with beluga caviar.

On the train, he's drinking a red wine - Bordeaux?

Back to Champagne when he's at the bar. Then we get into the most classic scene.

"Send the barman over please."

"A dry martini."

"Oiu, monsieur."

"Wait. 3 meausres of Gordon's, one of vodka, half a measure of kina lillet. Shake it over ice and then add a thin slice of lemon peel."

When James places his order, everyone else chimes in and wants one too.

Gordon's is a gin. Vodka is vodka :) Kina Lillet is NOT a vermouth!! It's a related but separate type of alcohol.

James takes a sip of it when it's brought, and says, "You know, that's not half bad! I'm going to hae to think up a name for that."

Later, when he's feeling grumpy after his loss, he goes to the bar.

"Vodka martini."

"Shaken or stirred?"

"Do I look like I give a damn?"

Drinks are not all fun in this movie. At one point he's almost killed by his drink.

When he's having dinner with Vesper, he is drinking his new drink and announces,

"You know, I think I'll call that a Vesper."

"Because of the bitter aftertaste?"

"No - because once you've tasted it, that's all you'll want to drink."

And that's it for wine!
